MA Sports Journalism

Delivered at Liverpool John Moores University's Mount Pleasant campus, this full-time master's programme trains aspiring sports journalists in the practical, multi-platform skills required for professional newsroom roles. Core content spans sports reporting, audio-visual journalism, media law, shorthand, SEO, and social media management, with students publishing live content on the Mersey Sports Live platform. Industry placements — including opportunities with Premier League clubs — are embedded in the curriculum, and the course draws on LJMU's strong links with regional and national newspapers, Sky Sports News, and radio stations.

The programme is delivered face to face over one year, with full-time students receiving around 16–18 contact hours per week across seminars, workshops, and tutorials in industry-standard facilities including newsrooms, edit suites, and a TV studio. Teaching is carried out by experienced journalists and academics. The course holds accreditation from the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), and students have the opportunity to sit NCTJ professional examinations and earn the full NCTJ Diploma during their studies.
