Introduction to Coaching Course

Designed as the essential first step before entering any specific coaching pathway — including Children's, Main (Youth/Adult), or Goalkeeping — the Scottish FA's Introduction to Coaching course builds foundational knowledge for new coaches. It covers the Scottish FA coach education pathway, effective communication and player interaction, the principles of a games-based approach to player development, the role of the coach within the coaching process, and strategies for addressing common coaching challenges.

The course runs over five hours and combines a virtual classroom element — two theory modules of 2.5 hours each — with an in-person session involving on-pitch practice, interactive presentations, and group discussion, making it a blended delivery. It is delivered by Scottish FA coach educators and is positioned at the introductory level as a prerequisite to Level One qualifications on the Children's, Youth/Adult, Goalkeeping, or Futsal pathways.
